Everybody loves Ban Mian. The ubiquitous noodle dish that is the perfect comfort during a rainy cold day or when you really just feel like having soupy noodles. That’s why I was delighted to find that Formosa Delights, a Taiwanese-based brand that’s known for serving hearty handmade noodles both in food courts and on their own, participating in the HPB’s Healthier Dining Programme.

The dish in focus today is their new wholemeal noodles with at least 20% whole grains. Everyone knows that wholemeal pasta can be unpleasant, so I was curious to see if it tastes the same, or better than the regular noodles!

(From 1 June 2014, you can also enjoy $1.50 off any of the wholemeal noodle dishes at Formosa Delights by flashing the deal from here.)

This is how it looked like. You can observe specks of whole grain in the noodles when you look closely.

Taste-wise, I am happy to report that it was every bit as good as the original one, if not better! The noodles were really springy and smooth, but I could taste the texture of the grains a little bit. That actually gave the dish more depth, and the result was that I felt more satisfied after the meal as well knowing that there’s extra fibre content in my noodles. The vegetables were also crunchy and fresh, to balance out with the flavors from the regular broth (tomato broth available too!)

Formosa Delights is also offering other healthier dining dishes with lower calorie count such as the pumpkin noodles and jade (spinach) noodles. Definitely a must-try the next time I go back.

Famous Taiwanese vegetarian chain Sufood has come to our shores by collaborating with the folks from Putien. Finally, vegetarian diners now have a healthy and non-apologetic option to go to in town, where it is conveniently located at Raffles City.

Non-apologetic you read? Yes. I find that often times, vegetarian food here consists of a lot of mock meat, which is typically soy in various forms made to taste like meat because chefs are unable to create dishes from scratch without meat flavors OR diners are unable to comprehend a dish that doesn't come with meat (all veggies, so expensive and not satisfying!)

That is why I found Sufood to be so refreshing -- as explained by our host, the chef has done extensive R&D into creating dishes using the natural flavors of the ingredients, in a Asian style. So for example, the use of seaweed (the original source of MSG) to layer it on top of their pizzas. Mushrooms are also used to a large extent to provide protein as the alternative.

So here's what we had that day. It was the Italian-inspired $25++ menu set, which comprised of 1 starter, 1 soup, 1 main and 1 dessert, plus two drinks. Really value for money!

First we had the very addictive bread sticks and dip, to go with the lightly refreshing trio of appetizers.

Then there's salad. I would definitely pick the mushroom salad amongst the salad choices because I really enjoyed the taste of the fresh mushrooms.

Plus a choice of soup. The pumpkin was rather bland, but the Root Soup was wonderful. I hope the chef will improve on the pumpkin, because I typically love pumpkin!

The favorite of the night was the main course - the Wild Mushroom Charcoal Tagliatelle. The mushroom was juicy and plump, while the pasta was al dente and flavoured just right.

We also tried the Star Pizza, which is so innovative and addictive -- it's almost like a light pastry or tea time snack! The huge mound of seaweed on top gave it unique touch.

I also really enjoyed the desserts because they were so fun. There was the sesame panna cotta, which was creamy and smooth. Sesame is good for your hair, apparently.

The Osmanthus Flower Jelly was quite standard, similar to what you can get from Chinese restaurants.

And lastly, the crowd favorite, vanilla ice cream with ready-to-harden chocolate that you can drizzle over, to create interesting "covers". I really liked this because its fun to eat and create.

Contemporary Asian/Western vegetarian cuisine done right, Sufood is set to enjoy many patrons to their doors as I would imagine it to be perfect to visit for a change, as well as to bring your parents or even grandparents who are vegetarians to try out!
