I went to Brasserie Gavroche on the eve of my birthday because I heard so much about it, especially from my French colleague who raved about its authenticity and quality. Coincidentally, another group of friends had suggested Cafe Gavroche that sits opposite, but I had wanted a proper French steak and some snails. So brasserie it is first! Cafe, I'll go back for you later.
The decor is very authentic feeling. These old shophouses in Tanjong Pagar, they always never fail to bring that atmosphere across.
We started with some cold bread :( but the Escargots de Bourgogne au beurre d’ail ($21) warmed us up. Burgundy snails slathered with a generous layer of ground parsley, garlic and butter, they are the quintessential French starter.
We then had the Sole meunière ($42), which is the lemon sole with brown butter, lemon and parsley. It was quite a generous piece and I really liked the mashed potatoes the fish was sitting on. The lemon sole itself was light, fresh and fragrant from the slightly crispy skin.
Next, the Grass-fed Angus beef from Ireland ($38) which had the rump steak cut with green peppercorn sauce and French fries (shown separately). Mmm. I love a good steak because it's so satisfying. I especially enjoy the taste of the juices as they oozes out of a soft, slightly chewy but manageable steak.
The fries were addictive. We couldn't stop eating them! Be warned.
Lastly, just enough room for some desserts. We ordered the Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate sauce ($14). While it might not be as great as Le Bistrot du Sommelier's, it is still pretty decent. The pastry was puffy and light -- and I love authentic vanilla ice cream where you can see the little flecks of vanilla bean!
I totally enjoyed myself during this birthday treat. I look forward to visiting Gavroche again!
