Travel Recommendations: Where to eat and drink in Athens, Greece

Hi guys! So I went to Athens and Santorini last year in October and really enjoyed my time there. In fact, Athens is probably the most underrated European city ever. The amount of culture and activities available PLUS the gorgeous food at affordable prices is great. Even their SIM cards (get it in town) and transport options are pretty good (you can call an Uber which is limited but available esp. from airport OR try their local Taxi app - Beat).

Anyway, here are some recommendations of the things I've tried and some that I've heard really good things for if you want to know where to eat and drink in Athens!

Restaurants

1. Tzitzikas Kai Mermigas

Really good meat, seafood and local food in bistro dining style. My top recco in town.

2. To Triantafyllo tis Nostimias - The Rose of Taste
Lekka 22, Athina 105 62, Greece

Didn't try but our group did and raved v much about it! It is homestyle Greek cuisine.

3. O Thanasis kebab Lunch
Mitropoleos 69, Athina 105 55, Greece

Heard about this - dillie tried but I didn't manage to check out. It's good though if u are looking for VFM kebab lunch.

4. Karamanlidika - Τα Καραμανλίδικα του Φάνη
Sokratous 1, Athina 105 52, Greece
+30 21 0325 4184

They have super traditional food in big portions so go if you are hungry with a big group, and try to make a reservation! You can also buy fresh meat and olive oil from their deli section in front.

Varvakios Central Market
Athinas 42, Athina 105 51, Greece
8am-6pm, closed on Sundays

This is not a restaurant per se but when you are there you should check out their central market - there's a corner selling vintage items as well. Next to it is Diporto (which I have never tried but it looked really good).

5. Diporto - Secret underground restaurant
Theatrou 2, Athina 105 52, Greece
10am-6pm, closed on Sundays

6. Psariston
Kalavriton 16, Iraklio 141 21, Greece
1pm to 1am most days
https://goo.gl/maps/qNuzJPEJ7rWMSrHn7

This place is not exactly in Athens and quite far so only go if you have a car! They do very very good seafood and freshly caught fish.

(Bonus) Santorini restaurant

Domaine Sigalas
11am to 8pm
Baxes, Oia, Santorini 847 02, Greece
Phone: +30 2286 071644 (Must call to check)

This is the ONE restaurant near the airport in Santorini you need to go to if you have time - the best meal we had on the island, even if transport there was quite iffy (you have to book a driver).

Desserts

1. Le Greche
Mitropoleos 16, Athina 105 63, Greece

Really creamy and rich gelato, esp. the pistachio! Super near to Mermigas as well.

2. DaVinci Gelato (Monastiraki)
Adrianou 50, Athina 105 55, Greece
+30 21 0325 3863

Super touristy but has good quality gelato, worth having it while you walk around the touristy area of Monastiraki or when going to the museums.

We also visited a traditional Greek dessert and pastry place. Here's the Instagram post (trying to get the name, it's all Greek to me!)

Cocktail bars

Nice alfresco area, chill spot to have a pre-dinner drink

Walk down the street for pizza at School Pizza Bar where the tables are school desks! Food's pretty good.

In the same street you will find a line of great themed bars: Mama Roux, Noel (Christmas themed bar), Baba au Rhum and Drunk Sinatra. (Don't need to go to the Speakeasy Athens if you are thinking of as that was pretty normal.) Rose of Taste is nearby to Drunk Sinatra!

That's it, hope this helps. Here are some pics of when we took a 3D2N trip out to Santorini which was filled with photo ops with the Chinese tourists and overpriced things! We enjoyed ourselves nonetheless though.
