Brunch and coffee tasting: Elixir Boutique Roasters at 10 Jln Serene, #01-03A, Singapore 258748

Here's a very straightforward cafe review for Elixir Boutique Roasters and cafe at Serene Centre at the Bukit Timah area, which I was v. familiar with having gone to JC around there. This cafe is good for coffee and food if you are in the area and looking to partake in some brunching. The establishment occupies the front of Fat Belly's (steakhouse at night) counter and could only seat around 8, but there's also some alfresco seating to shoot the breeze.

There's a variety of coffee beans that's roasted by the principal barista, not on the spot but at their roaster in the West. They are then ground and extracted into cups of delicious coffees back at Elixir. Their black can get quite intense, I'll say, so opt for a latte or cappuccino if you prefer something a bit lighter and fruitier.

For example, the Flow State Blend with 80% Brazil Cerrado beans mixed with 20% Ethopian Yirgacheffe G2 went into a smooth cup of latte (S$5).

On to the food! Here's their brunch / lunch menu. They are open every day except Wednesdays and brunch-lunch is avail from 8.30am to 4pm.

We started with an excellent dish of Brulée French Toast (S$18) with candied bacon, seasonal fruits and chantilly cream. It's simply caramelised toast, but when you have good bread, it does the job. Highly recommended, though I do wish the price to be slightly more palatable. 3/5

We also sampled Truffle Eggs Prosciutto (S$22) which had some fresh ham, shaved truffle on top of perfect scrambled eggs (really good!), thick brioche toast and and some parmigiana-reggiano cheese shavings on arugula leaves. Delicious! Simple, filling and had all the components to make a brunch-goer happy. Again on the pricing I would wince a little, but hey there's truffle! 3/5

If brunch-y items are not your thing, how about some Grilled Halloumi (S$18) with kale, charred scallions, lemon preserve, baby corn, Kenya beans and tahini aioli? I don't know about you but every time I think of and taste halloumi, they give me a squeaky feeling. However it's not actually unpleasant. I really enjoyed this dish with the savoury sweet sesame dressing bringing the ingredients to life. Plus again it is vegetarian, so yay! Prices are also quite reasonable for a lunch (11am onwards) main. 3.5/5

Next we had some Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang (S$22) using chef's special rempeh recipe. The blue (stained with butterfly pea) nasi lemak is free flow, but the highlight was the melt-in-your-mouth beef cheek. And for $22 its wagyu, which is pretty impressive! If you are a savoury and Asian food person, this is the must-order dish. I was quite pleasantly surprised by this dish's appearance amidst all the 'brunch-y' ang mo food, TBH! Good job. 4/5

For a complete Western food brunch though, you could try the cream-free Carbonara with onsen egg (S$18) using pancetta and parmigiano-reggiano with herbs. Affordable price point for a main that uses pancetta (not cheap) - though I wish it was guanciale (cured pork cheek) instead and had none of that offending green garnish and omg, onions. Carbonara should be just 4 ingredients! Pasta's al dente and the egg's pretty cool to break over for a creamy mouthfeel though. 2/5

Before we shuffled off from being so full, we had the chance to witness some coffee cocktails in the making, also by the barista. It takes skill to incorporate coffee into cocktails due to its very distinctive taste and overpowering flavour, but somehow that's managed at Elixir!

For example, the Killer Queen (S$13) cocktail made with homemade cascara syrup and disaronno Italian liqueur (like amaretto, or almond jelly haha) was surprisingly balanced and modest unlike what the name suggests. I would recommend this if you are trying their cocktails for the first time!

Overall, Elixir Boutique Roasters cafe is a good place for a cuppa and some food - though pricing can be adjusted downwards for their brunch items, they do a mean rendang and scrambled eggs. Pair them with a coffee cocktail and you're good to go!
