Lunch review: Comida Mexicana at 404 East Coast Rd, Singapore 428998

"Nice but expensive" was the consensus that I got after reading Google reviews for the Mexican restaurant Comida Mexicana, situated in Katong and quite a distance away from me. But good Mexican food isn't something one comes across very readily in Singapore so I was willing to give it a try for lunch with some friends recently. The restaurant's pretty big and well-ventilated, and was rather empty during lunch time.

We first started with some Chili con Queso (S$17) which is melted cheese and jalapenos, onions and tomatoes. It came with a side of tortilla chips and we ordered a small side of guac (S$7) as well. This made for a good start. The cheese was runny but not diluted and was a great complement to the crunchy corn chips. 3/5

We also got the Portobello mushrooms with garlic and balsamic brown butter sauce (S$24) which might be my favourite of the day. It was simple but full of wonderful flavours that gelled well with each other. 4/5

We also got a pitcher (5 glasses) of frozen pink guava margarita (S$76) to share. It was so tropical and refreshing. The alcohol in there was masked by the fruity flavour but it is definitely there. We had enough for about 2 glasses each. 3.5/5

We had to scan the e-menu (PDF) to order, so for the first 10 minutes of our lunch everyone was just staring at their phone. It's quite a classic list.

What's a Mexican meal without some tacos? We chose the messy grilled fish tacos with fresh mango salsa (S$28 for 3) which was super generous in terms of the ingredients. The fish was quite fresh, even if it was grilled. The combination worked well to deliver bites of complete nutrition and flavour that still felt light and lively. 3.5/5

We also got the Carne asada (S$54) with grain-fed grilled steak alongside tortillas, pico de Gallo, guac, sour cream, salsa and black beans to share. It's quite the platter - for 4 pax the grilled steak (cut into strips for taco-making) could have been more - esp. since it was so tasty and juicy. The only thing hard to stomach is the price on this dish. 4/5

Finally we added on one more dish of chicken enchiladas with green tomato sauce (S$21) served with Mexican rice and refried beans because we didn't feel so full, but this was probably a mistake because everything expanded after that and we were overly full. This dish was also the least impressive (you could tell from the looks of it). Nothing outstanding - even the Mexican rice on the side tasted a bit like a generic rice with a bit of pesto. 2/5

We had to end with some sinfully good churros (S$16) which was surprisingly well done - not burnt or overly sweet (the dough), and the chocolate sauce was also quite light. Again, the pricing of this could have been ... adjusted to reflect the ingredients better. But no complaints on the taste of it. 3.5/5

In conclusion, I agree with most of the reviews on Comida Mexicana. The food's good, but be prepared to fork out some dough for it. We paid $312 in total for 4 pax for the lunch, which is about $78 per pax. Now that's hefty so try it if your craving for Mexican food is immense and there's no other option near you.
