Peranakan Cafe Review: Babba at 15-9 Jln Riang, Singapore 358987

Babba is a new restaurant and cafe near Lorong Chuan MRT that is opened up by the guys from The Brewing Ground cafe in Katong and serves Peranakan-inspired brunch, lunch and dinner. I think it's always great to have more Peranakan options around because they are such a unique part of our culture! The cafe's nice and comfortably designed without any food smell, and the window facing the small road outside lets in a lot of light.

I quite like the bar counters against the windows and the use of the rattan chairs and terrazzo tables!

We went for lunch so their Little Babba menu was what's available.

So my dining companion was really excited to have the Dry Laksa Pasta (S$26), which was served with Hokkaido scallops, tiger prawns and fried beancurd puffs. It was quite decent and flavourful even though the scallops look slightly burnt. However, she went again a month later and experienced a completely different version probably by someone else that turned her off the cafe after that. So I would say there's probably consistency issues! (No rating, then)

I ordered the Crab Omelette (S$25) which saw generous chunks of crabmeat with egg topped with hae bi hiam floss and pickled shallots, served with some toasted sourdough. Having been back from Thailand, I'd to say our local version pales in comparison. However the HBH was a nice savoury touch to add a bit of kick and spice to the dish. And it was quite filling too. However it's not a dish that I'll crave for or want to re-order. 3.5/5

There's also a selection of fresh kuehs made by the Babba's baba and these looked so good. They are not easy to make, as you all might know.

I got a cup of latte  which is pretty average and some ondeh ondeh (S$4 for 6 pieces) which were good, though the price is a bit tough to swallow.

I wish the food could be more consistent and also more affordable so that I'll be able to regularly visit without feeling the pinch! I might go back to try their dinner mains in future though and give them another chance to impress. Regardless it was a pleasant cafe to catch up with friends over some food.

🙅 Thank you, next
