Hidden Find: HAMBAOBAO & Lil's Taproom at 11 Sam Leong Rd, #03-08 Trio Building, Singapore 207903

This is definitely a hidden find. Nestled in the corner of the 3rd floor in a nondescript building, this burger and craft beer joint shares the same licensed name of McDonald's (which is endearingly called Hambaobao Pte Ltd) in Singapore. The gastropub of sorts is decked out in retro-chic decor and serves a relatively small menu of food with craft beers ordered separately.  I'm glad to say even though it was an open kitchen, the ventilation was powerful enough that one does not walk out smelling like food (pet peeve).

Here's the 5-burger menu. There's just fries and loaded nachos to go along with it and 5 types of desserts and one drink, a pot of 20-year old pu'er, if you are not a fan of beer. I think they have other non-alcoholic drinks maybe not on the menu but yea. If you're there, you should be trying something that's on the board.

Here's the bar with the beers on tap at the right side. Very cool!

At that time, these were the beers available. I'm sure its changed by now.

I got the 20-year old pu'er (S$5.50) which was served piping hot in a cool teapot set. Very interesting - it actually works quite well to cut the grease from the burgers, encourages slow sipping and is a welcome change from sodas or generic ice teas. The price is good too considering it's old enough to go to uni.

My brother got the Classic Beef (S$8.50) that comes with some fried cheese. I didn't try it but it sure looked really good and satisfying!

My brother's gf got the What the Fish (S$9) burger which I've not tried too but can you just look at how gigantic that fish is! The zucchini became a bit wet though towards the end but it was a great accompaniment to the fish patty.

Of course, I had to get the "TikTok-famous" burger, the Crispy Pork Belly (S$9.50) burger which I had zero regrets. The hoisin sauce covered crispy chunks of pork belly was just so unique yet familiar, enclosed within a soft fluffy buns and slices of cucumber. It is very simple but delicious, even though its definitely not easy to consume!

Here's another view of that crispy pork belly skin and sauce all just beautifully presented. I'll rate this 4.5/5 and would highly recommend it! Oh and do get the potato-y handcut fries because they were fresh, crispy and so darn addictive, perfect with any burger you choose. And of course with a pint of what's available from Alive Brewing Co. to wash it all down.

Overall a really smart and cool fusion burger joint that encourages one to deviate from the norm while playing to the rules on good combinations that work. I think its a great dating or casual friends chill out spot since it wasn't too crowded or noisy. I'll definitely be back to try the rest!
