Another place that I had wanted to check out but never got around to until April this year was Beef Sukiyaki Don Keisuke, located near Tanjong Pagar Plaza in a super ulu corner. But when my birthday rolled around this year and my bestie asked where I'll like to eat I thought it was then or never. So we made the trek to this small 8? 9? seater restaurant tucked below a condo called ONZE that does not accept reservations. We went at 6.15pm and was faced with a 40 minutes queue, which actually we found was unnecessary if we were to arrive at 8pm and everyone had cleared out! So that's a pro tip. Go late, not early.
While in the queue in the stifling heat, we had the chance to peruse the super limited 1-page menu (in EN and JP). Basically you just choose between 2 types of meat: Wagyu or US beef and pork. Of course we just gunned for the Wagyu sukiyaki don at $29.90 since we were queuing already (and it was my birthday!). The rest are just add-ons and drinks.
We sat along the counter and my poor bestie was unfortunately right in front of some chillers or machinery which heated the air behind her even more. We were both kinda sweaty after queuing outside and being in this small space that does not seem to be air-conditioned. Also because the chefs will cook the sukiyaki beef in front of you.
Here's our beautiful slivers of wagyu. Look at the marbling!
We were also served with chawanmushi, miso soup and an onsen egg to add to our sukiyaki bowl when it arrives.
There's this entire performative element where the wagyu slices were cooked a la 30 seconds? I don't think it was even a minute because of how thinly sliced they were. A couple of swishes and we're done!
Honestly quite a nice view, watching our beef cooked just nice in the sweet sukiyaki sauce.
The beef's lightly cooked so as to maintain optimum tenderness, just enough for the fats to melt when you bite onto it! I definitely recommend the wagyu cut if you guys were to go.
And the final bowl was served with just some veggies and spring onions on top. It was an extremely simple and satisfying bowl of beef sukiyaki that deserves the price tag. We ate quickly and left the place only to realise it was much cooler outside in the condo lobby and the queue had disappeared.
I would actually go back if I have a beef sukiyaki bowl craving, but go later. So I'll recommend y'all to check it out, especially if you are a fan of good quality Japanese food!
🙅 Thank you, next
