Food Review: Vatos City House at 36 Robinson Rd, Singapore 068877

I was recently invited to try out the food and drinks at Vatos City House, the second branch of Vatos at South Beach that opened in October 2023. So i was there one super rainy evening recently to see if its any good! Vatos made their name serving up Mexican-Korean dishes and in particular are known for their tacos.

The restaurant's super spacious and well decorated, with a huge ass bar. The dining area can also accommodate large groups.

View their food and drinks menu here.

We first started with some drinks. My bestie had the Smokey Mezcal Margarita (S$20), which was indeed very smokey. These drinks are dangerous, hence the skull. Beware!

I decided to get the signature Corona Rita (S$32). This is a huge margarita with a bottle of upturned Corona beer in it. Very pleasant to drink because the beer only go down as you sip. A little unsure about the pricing though (but its huge, so maybe for sharing?)

For food we first had the OG Kimchi Carnitas Fries (S$20) with braised pork carnitas and super generous slabs of kimchi. Everything's super fresh and appetising and great pairing with drinks. I would highly recommend this! 4/5

But we waited a while and got the Mango Prawn Quesadilla (S$25) with the saddest amount of mango salsa on top. The cheese's coated the entire tortilla such that they got overwhelmed by the saltiness of it, and while there was quite a few prawns inside, the dish was quite off-balanced in terms of the flavours, without the mango salsa's freshness or taste. I would unfortunately fail this dish, but feedback's given and hopefully it will be better! 1/5

But redemption is on hand with their Cowboy Queso (S$22), which had pepper jack and cheddar cheese molten and mixed with black beans, pico de gallo and cilantro lime crema. This I'd imagine will be great for sharing amongst a table of 4 cheese lovers, especially with a frozen margarita! 3.5/5

The highlight of the evening had to be these tacos, which were as good as I remember from their South Beach branch. We had the Galbi Short Rib (S$22 for 2) and the Baja Fish (S$16 for 2). The filling was well-marinated and generous, and topped with fresh slaw. 4/5

The baha fish was in particular super crunchy on the outside while the fish tasted really fresh. I think I can down two of these myself! 4/5

Come for the drinks and order tacos. The Kimchi Fries are great if you have a big group for sharing!
