Korean barbeques are a dime a dozen nowadays with the proliferation of K-culture (and food), especially in the Tanjong Pagar area. However, I recently discovered one such place which is of good value AND quality while remaining really authentic, and that is Charim Korean BBQ. And such places are the ones that can be depended on time and again, which is why I want to share it with y'all! This place was recommended by my friend and not an invited tasting but I feel compelled to share.
So note that Charim is closed on Mondays and they only accept walk-ins. During peak dinner hours be expected to queue up to an hour or more. When I last went we waited for around 40 minutes from 7pm on a weekday. Which was pretty ok I guess!
So BBQ diners get a 90 minute time limit and ala carte diners get 60 minutes. Again quite fair. Thing is, they close at 1am every night except for Sunday night, so you could also try to come either earlier like 5.30pm or after 8.30pm when the crowded died down significantly.
Here's Charim's dinner menu (if you try to download from their Google Drive it is 161M lol).
We got their Set A (S$68 for 2 pax) which first came with lots of banchan and lettuce for the pork belly wrap.
Set A was made of salted pork neck, pork belly and sliced pork belly and also came with a soup (we picked kimchi) and steamed egg. Imagine our amazement as the staff started to cut up and cook all the meat for us on the tilted cast iron pan with a base of fresh kimchi and some potatoes/onions.
In no time our food is cooked. The kimchi soup and steamed egg by the way, was one of the most delicious I've ever had despite being free.
The meat itself was also super yummy. The fact that someone cooked it just nice for us added to the experience (I dislike watching over my meat trying to not let it burn).
Overall pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and service at Charim Korean BBQ which is why I felt like I had to share. The $68++ set plus a soju and beer (to make soju bomb) ended up costing each of us $77 nett. Go and try it!
🙅 Thank you, next
