Food Review: Edo Ichi Japanese restaurant at 9 Clover Way, Singapore 579081

Tucked away in a quiet residential area at 9 Clover Way, Edo Ichi may not be the easiest restaurant to find, but it’s a hidden gem worth discovering. This chain Japanese restaurant from Malaysia offers a huge variety of Japanese food and sake at affordable prices, making it a great spot for families and couples alike. Here's a rundown and review of my recent dining experience at Edo Ichi.

It was filled with regulars on a normal Wednesday.

Here are some of the menu pages. There was too many for me to post all!

These set dinner options are very popular, I was told. I can see why because it takes the decision-making out of the meal.

Here are some of their starters and snacks.

They have quite a few dishes featuring iberico pork, which is great.

Sashimi options

I was treated to an entire bottle of sake for myself! If I knew there was so much food, I would have asked someone to join me.

I started our meal with the Sashimi Platter Sampler just for my tasting. However, they offer platters from at S$32.80 with five types of sashimi (two pieces each) and it’s a reasonably priced introduction to their seafood offerings. The fish was impressively fresh and didn’t have that frozen taste that often plagues sashimi at more budget-friendly places. The standout was the tuna belly, which was rich and fatty, practically melting in the mouth. However, the salmon sashimi was a little too orange for my liking, lacking the natural, subtle hue of high-quality salmon. Overall, it was a decent platter but not without its minor faults. 3.5/5

Just look at the amount of fat content in this tuna belly slice!

As for the sushi, I sampled a few varieties, but none were particularly memorable, but there are so many other things you can order off the menu. Moving on to the snacks, the Deep-Fried Marinated Squid Tentacles (S$10.80) were a delightful surprise. These crispy morsels were well-seasoned, providing a satisfying crunch with each bite. Perfect for pairing with a glass of sake, they scored a solid 4/5.

Another great drinking snack was the Grilled Marinated Flatfish with Mayo (S$18). The fish was grilled to perfection, with a slightly smoky flavour complemented beautifully by the creamy kewpie mayo dip. This dish earned a 4/5 for its balance and execution, and pairing with sake.

The Kurobuta Teppanyaki (S$26.90) was another dish I tried, featuring juicy Iberico pork served sizzling on a hot plate. The meat was tender and flavourful, though I must admit, as someone who’s not a huge fan of pork or teriyaki, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Still, it’s a good choice for those who enjoy richer meats. 3.5/5

The Chicken Teriyaki (S$12.80) was a mixed bag. While the crispy, pan-fried exterior was delightful, the batter was a bit too thick in comparison to the meat inside, throwing off the balance. A slightly better meat-to-batter ratio would have improved this dish significantly. 3/5

Just imagine how crispy this is.

For something comforting, the Azari Clams with Mushrooms in Clear Broth was a fantastic choice. The broth was light yet flavourful, and the clams were incredibly fresh, each one bursting with oceanic goodness. It’s a simple dish, but sometimes simplicity is key. 4/5

A more adventurous dish was the Seasonal Abalone topped with Uni and Ikura, served on a unique pearlescent abalone shell. The combination of the creamy but slightly metallic uni (after all, it is not the super high-grade ones that cost a bomb), briny ikura, and tender abalone made for a medley of textures and flavours that was both interesting and delicious. This dish stands out not just for its taste but for its presentation as well. 3.5/5

So cool? I did not know abalone came with such shells.

I ended our meal with a scoop of imported Japanese sesame ice cream, which was absolutely divine. Rich, nutty, and perfectly creamy, it was the ideal end to the meal. 5/5
