If you’re on the hunt for authentic Korean BBQ in the heart of Singapore, Um Yong Baek at 27 Boon Tat St is where you want to be. I visited this popular lunch and K-BBQ spot in the CBD back in March after a year of waiting for the hype to die down somewhat. Getting a reservation became easier after they opened another branch and also opened online reservations.
The restaurant has a cool relaxed vibe and none of the heavy smells associated with a BBQ restaurant. It was quite crowded on a Saturday evening but the floor seating was interesting because it contributed to the rustic vibe of the place. We chose the normal seats (thank goodness) further inside!
I had the pleasure of trying the aged Korean pork they are known for - the Ohgyeopsal and Tongmoksal Jumeokgogi, priced at $27 per portion. The Tongmoksal Jumeokgogi, a marinated pork neck was juicy and meaty without that porky taste. 4/5
The Ohgyeopsal, or pork belly was rich, flavourful and melted in the mouth. It was not incredibly fatty but just nice with bits of the darker meat with cartilage given some textural contrast. 4/5
The pork is barbecued table-side by the attentive staff, ensuring it’s cooked to perfection, and he also instructed us to eat the meat in a certain order paired with the salt and sides. Quite militant but very efficient!
We also got the braised anchovies in chilli gravy, the Meljorim (S$7) to go with the pork. This was a great choice - the salty savoury anchovies went so well!
What a bite.
Accompanying the BBQ, I tried the TongDaeji Kimchi Jjim ($28), a robust kimchi stew with tender pork. The stew was comforting and had just the right amount of spice, with the tanginess of the kimchi balancing the richness of the pork. It’s the kind of dish that warms you up from the inside out, a perfect choice for those who enjoy a bit of heat with their meal. 4/5
To round off the meal, we had the Mul-Makguksu ($16), or cold noodles, which provided a refreshing contrast to the hearty BBQ. The noodles were light and chewy, served in a cold, tangy broth that was incredibly refreshing. It’s the perfect palate cleanser after the rich, meaty dishes that I really enjoyed. 4.5/5
Um Yong Baek delivers a truly authentic Korean BBQ experience. From the quality of the meats to the care in preparation, this is a place that takes its BBQ seriously. Whether you're a seasoned Korean BBQ enthusiast or a first-timer, this spot is sure to impress.
