Japanese Food Review: Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu Singapore at Raffles City #B1-63

Ever since I knew of it, I had wanted to try out Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu at the basement of Raffles City, the first and only gyukatsu place to open in Singapore. That might also explain why when I went at 6.30pm on a Friday night (walk-ins only) it already saw a 20-pax queue ahead of us, which meant that me and my friend had to queue for an hour before it was our turn. However, service was fast and the food came promptly after ordering. Was it, however, worth the wait?

Before that, ICYMI, gyukatsu is the Kyoto-style beef cutlet or the beef version of the more popular tonkatsu pork cutlet. According to their menu, "Our famous Gyukatsu is quickly fried at high temperatures to preserve the natural flavour of the meat. We also take particular care to serve it crispy on the outside and medium-rare on the inside. To further enhance your dining experience, we offer a variety of sauces and condiments, allowing you to enjoy multiple flavours in one meal."

Here are a few pages of their menu. They have a $55 A5 wagyu set if one is feeling a bit more baller, which actually is quite worth it considering the wagyu grade.

I chose the Tenderloin and Sirloin set (S$29) since I could not decide between the two. It came with a variety of sauces (including curry) at the top right, an onsen egg, miso soup and really good Japanese rice. Just the way wagyu is meant to be enjoyed.

The meat was indeed very crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside, though I have to say it actually toughens slightly if you take your time eating it. The last few pieces were not as superior as the first slice on fresh from the kitchen and on the hot plate!

Both sirloin and tenderloin slices were amazingly soft and flavourful with a light crispy batter outside. Now I get why the queue might not be just filled with first-timers but also repeat customers!

I think it is worth trying because it is something different from tonkatsu and despite being the only one, Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu manages to serve up quality food. Go on a weekday and go early (doors open from 5pm or late, like 8+pm) and let me know if you think it is worth it!
