Brunch Review: Bonjour Ma Cuisine at 39 Craig Road, Singapore

...and everything's yellow. That seemed to be the theme as I visited the newly established Bonjour Ma Cuisine, the brunch concept by 1-Michelin star French restaurant Ma Cuisine at 39 Craig Road. Times must be tough for restaurants to open up brunch concepts, but it is also a smart move to capitalise on the day and lunch time crowd since rental is so steep!

The cosy interior immediately transports you to a Parisian bistro with its plush red velvet seats, walls of wine bottles, and quintessential French decor. The inviting atmosphere makes you want to linger over coffee and croissants. There was al fresco seats too but it was simply too warm to sit out.

Fortunately the interior was cool and did not trap any food smell despite the kitchen window and air-conditioning (phew, otherwise I will really question the Michelin inspectors).

The one-page menu is refreshingly straightforward, with a thoughtfully curated selection of savoury dishes including a French spring roast chicken at just $19.90 (quite the steal for a Michelin-pedigreed establishment!). I was particularly amused by the pastry section cheekily named "the bad habits" - featuring croissants, pain au chocolat, and other buttery delights that are impossible to resist despite one's best intentions.

On to the food and drinks! We started with a Black Coffee (S$6.50) which was robust and aromatic without being bitter - a proper French-style brew that immediately perked me up after the Saturday night before.

The signature Plain Omelette (S$11.50) truly marked the sign of a great chef - deceptively simple yet technically perfect. The exterior was just set while the interior remained creamy, achieving that perfect French omelette consistency that's harder to execute than it looks. No browning, no over-cooking, just pure eggy perfection lightly seasoned with salt and French butter. 4.5/5

We also tried the Pate Au Parmesan (S$14.80) featuring large tagliatelle pasta generously smothered in French butter and parmesan cheese. This dish was rich, indulgent comfort food at its finest - the pasta cooked to a perfect al dente and the sauce silky and decadent. Pasta under $15 at a Michelin resto? Hell yea! We also ordered a plain Salad Verde (S$8.50) to add some greens and cut through the richness with its bright, acidic dressing. 4/5 for the pasta, 3.5/5 for the simple but necessary salad.

We were there primarily for their signature Coque Madame Truffe (S$28.80) which was basically a ham and cheese sandwich topped with a sunny side up egg. But oh, what a sandwich it was! The bread was perfectly toasted, the ham was of excellent quality, and the melted cheese was complemented by just the right amount of truffle - enough to taste without being overwhelming. The runny egg yolk created a luscious sauce when broken. Quite pricey for a sandwich, but the execution was flawless. 4/5

Lastly, we had the Pain & Beurre (S$6.50) which was just plain sourdough bread and French Beillevaire butter. I thought we needed more food, but this came way too late in the meal. It would have been perfect if it came with the omelette or while we started with the coffee. We could also have skipped on this. While the quality of both bread and butter was excellent, the timing and portion of butter left something to be desired. 2.5/5

In conclusion, Bonjour Ma Cuisine offers a lovely slice of French cafe culture right in the heart of Singapore. With fair prices and decent food from a 1-Michelin star restaurant, it's definitely worth checking out for a leisurely brunch. While not every dish hit a home run, the classics were executed with the finesse you'd expect from a Michelin-pedigreed kitchen. I'd recommend reserving your a table!
