Food Review: Onggii at 3 Temasek Blvd, #02-300 Suntec City, Singapore 038983

Onggii, a Korean soul soup restaurant that is fairly new in Suntec, got on my radar when it was listed as no. 2 best K-food spot on the "Oppachelin" Guide by oppa foodie influencer @esyfilms . Singapore was also experiencing rainy weather then which makes Korean soup one of the best meals. So despite it being a walk-in place, I went on a Friday evening at around 7.30pm with a friend. Actually the queue was quite moving (we waited 15 mins) because they were asking those with 2 pax to skip ahead of larger groups, so this is a pro tip! There's plenty of seating in the fairly large (but well-ventilated) restaurant.

According to the onggii menu here, the restaurant is named after the traditional Korean fermented jar used for storing fermented food and their specialty is the gomtang, which is a "28-hour boiled beef bone broth known for its rich, hearty flavour and nourishing benefits." That's pretty cool and the cookware and cutlery certainly made the place stand out. Service was swift and perfunctory and I ordered the Jangteo Gomtang (S$18.90) via the QR code system and it arrived after about 15 minutes. Oh and if you leave a Google review you also get a free taster makgeolli (which I did not really like).

I enjoyed the sides though the pickled kimchi radish was a little too sour for me, but the soup was definitely the highlight. It was reminiscent of the Odeon Beef Noodle soup that we have locally upon the first sip and very comforting as a result. I hope every other gomtang tasted like that! The beef tripe and tendon in there was also quite generous. 4.5/5

My friend tried the Kimchi Jjigae ((S$14.90) with pork this time round since she had been here a couple of times prior. It was decent for the price but I've had more flavourful kimchi jjigaes elsewhere (like Korean BBQ restaurants). This one was quite light-tasting in comparison. 3/5

We also ordered the ala-carte Kimchi Jeon (S$15.90) which had super thick slices of crispy kimchi in batter. TBH I felt like the batter could have been less thick to give it a even more crispy texture but I guess this is not a specialty. It was alright but I was super full after two slices (and my soup set). 3.5/5

I can see why Onggii is highly rated by a native Korean. The flavours are authentic and the food's quite moderately priced. I would want to come back to try other gomtang but will skip the joen and makgeolli and have them elsewhere.
