Food Review: Grub Pasta Kitchen at River Plains, Bishan Park, Singapore 569930

I visited Grub Pasta Kitchen at Bishan Park last year with a friend for dinner, curious to try their pasta offerings that I'd heard about from my sister who said she and her family loves it. Of course, being a pasta aficionado who lives just opposite, I had to go give it a try.

The restaurant is impressively spacious indoors, with bright lighting and a family-friendly atmosphere that makes it popular with parents and children. There's also a pleasant alfresco seating area, which we moved to for dessert to enjoy the evening breeze and more relaxed ambiance.

Here's their menu

My friend had the Beef Genovese Reginette (S$22). This pale pasta dish came with what was described as slow-cooked Angus beef brisket, but the meat was present in such tiny bits that it was barely perceptible in each bite. The pasta itself was disappointingly overcooked, lacking the al dente texture that quality pasta should have. Rather than having that distinctive semolina wheat flavour, the noodles reminded me more of our local ban mian or mee hoon kueh – not what you'd expect from an Italian pasta dish. 3/5

I had the classic Roman Amartriciana Reginette (S$21) that comes with guanciale, tomato sauce, sun-dried tomatoes, basil oil and pecorino Romano. While the ingredient list sounded promising, the execution fell short. Again, the pasta was too soft, and for the price point, the portion of guanciale and other ingredients felt somewhat meager. The flavours were pleasant but not memorable enough to justify the cost. 3/5

What saved our dining experience was undoubtedly the dessert. We tried their signature Basque Burnt Cheesecake (S$9) which has been voted Best Cheesecake by Straits Times – and I can see why it earned this accolade. The cheesecake had that perfect melty cheese texture that seemed to dissolve in the mouth, with just the right balance of sweetness and tang. The burnt top added a delightful caramelised flavour that complemented the creamy interior beautifully. This was the standout item of our meal by far. 4.5/5

Grub Pasta Kitchen offers a pleasant dining environment but falls short on their main pasta offerings, which is unfortunate given their specialty focus. The pasta itself seems to miss the mark on texture and authenticity, and the portion of premium ingredients doesn't quite align with the price point. However, their dessert game is impressively strong, making it worth stopping by at least for the cheesecake.
