This review is long overdue, but I visited The Feather Blade at Tanjong Pagar for dinner with a friend last year sometime in April, as I was drawn by their reputation for affordable steak options and tried (and liked) the Flat Iron in London. Located in a shophouse along the bustling Tanjong Pagar Road, this compact steak, burger and cocktail bar promises an accessible luxury dining experience.
The restaurant is housed in a cosy shophouse setting with neon lighting and hip decor that gives it a modern, trendy vibe. However, the small space means noise levels can get quite high, making extended conversations somewhat challenging. The atmosphere feels more casual fast-food than fine dining, which sets expectations for the meal ahead. Upon being seated, we were pleasantly surprised to receive complimentary popcorn with a curry seasoning. This unassuming starter turned out to be incredibly addictive – the perfect nibble while perusing the menu!
For our meal, we ordered a selection of items to share, starting with the mac and cheese (S$14) which had a nice consistency but was ultimately quite average, lacking that rich, complex cheese flavour that elevates this classic comfort dish. It felt more like a side dish than something that could stand on its own. 3/5
The Spinach (S$9) was competently prepared but unremarkable. It did serve its purpose as a green accompaniment to our proteins, providing some balance to the meal and it was fun to mix the runny egg yolk in. 3/5
Their signature 200g Feather Blade steak (S$25) came with herb butter and smoke salt. The meat was indeed soft and tender as promised, cooked to a perfect medium-rare. The steak itself had a mild beefy flavour, with the herb butter adding some welcome richness. For the price point, it was well-executed, though it lacked the depth of flavour you might find at more premium establishments. 3.5/5
Next, we had the O.G. (S$22) burger that featured a 200g Feather Blade patty, bearnaise sauce, shallots in brioche buns. While the beef patty was properly cooked, the overall flavour profile was somewhat one-dimensional. I found myself wishing for stronger flavours or perhaps some smokiness to elevate it beyond just being a decent burger. 3/5
We finished with the Rose Tiramisu (S$16), which was their only dessert offering. This was disappointing – predominantly sweet without the complexity or balance you'd expect from a good tiramisu. The rose element didn't add much beyond a faint floral note. At S$16, this felt overpriced for what it delivered. 2.5/5
While The Feather Blade offers decent, affordable steak options in a trendy setting, the mild flavours across all dishes and the casual fast-food approach to service and ambiance made the overall experience less compelling than I had hoped. Despite the affordable pricing, I found myself thinking I might prefer to save up a bit more for a steakhouse that delivers more robust flavours and a more complete dining experience.
