I love the drinks scene in Bangkok. It is vibrant, fun and more importantly, affordable. Cocktails cost around S$12-15 (after tax and service) there instead of the $25++ here. That makes experimenting with them way more accessible, and that was what we did on a drizzly Friday night. My friend had researched this bar in Chinatown called Ba Hao that she wanted to go to, and it has food too (modern Chinese), so we decided to take a Grab there for dinner and drinks.
We started with a cocktail each - I had a gin-based cocktail (can't remember which) which was light and refreshing. My friend had the signature cocktail, the Mandarin Tonic (328 THB) which had gin infused with sweet orange and sesame with tonic.
We started with some Soft Tofu (158 THB) which had silky cold tofu and century egg. This was a strangely comforting dish to have to whet our appetites! 4/5
The best dish of the night, hands down, was the Chinese Eggplant with Miso Garlic Sauce (188 THB). The sticky sweet miso garlic complimented the soft eggplant perfectly and it was appetising and fulfilling as well. 4.5/5
We also got some Beef Dumplings (248 THB) that contained Chinese chives and minced beef served with white sesame cream sauce and homemade chilli oil that was decent enough. 3/5.
In the background we also ordered the Scallion Pancakes (158 THB) where the fragrant scallion pancake is fried and served with hoisin and sriracha mayo sauce. This was also quite normal but it went well with the sauces and the cocktails. 3/5
We were not full at all so we got a carb dish in the form of the Tan Tan Mian (248 THB). This was surprisingly good, coming from a small bar kitchen. The noodles had a good bite to it and the peanut soup was a little sweet and savoury. Big surprise! 4/5
The General Tao Chicken and Bokchoy Rice (248 THB) was also decent, though I skipped on the rice. The chicken was sweet and crunchy while the interior retained some juiciness. Decent as well for bar food and for someone who would like a more substantial dish. 3.5/5
Ba Hao was an interesting venue for cocktails and modern Chinese food. Despite the small space, dining and drinking there was quite comfortable. I would recommend this place if you want good food to pair with some delicious cocktails!

After that we walked a short distance to Teens of Thailand, a gin bar, for another drink. The decor was pretty cool.
The staff were really friendly and recommended us their top 3 bestselling gins. There was a long list of flavours available, in regular and GIANT sizes.
Unfortunately, we all agreed that our gin drinks missed the mark of a good cocktail. They were quite rough and the flavours infused such as pineapple or spice tasted a bit incongruent. We were not impressed and left after one drink.
This is a nice place for a social gathering but for cocktails, skip it!
