Food Review: Gelato Messina opens at 1 Club St, Singapore 069400

I remember trying Gelato Messina when I went to Sydney (no queue) thinking it's good but it's just normal gelato. Well, seems like it was good enough for investors to open up Gelato Messina Singapore on 6 May 2025, because that's exactly what happened. And because Singaporeans' favourite cuisine (and flavour) is novelty, it attracted quite a crowd. I joined the queue last night (7 May) at about 9.40pm (they close at 10pm!) which turned out to be fast moving. It was also only for people who want to try the different flavours, I learned, as I was handed a menu at the queue. If I knew what I wanted, I can skip the line and go straight to pay. Prices were quite high for a single scoop at $7.50 - however, for a double scoop at $10 that's the same as Apiary. And if you get a 3 scoops that's only $12, which means $4 per scoop!

Here's the Gelato Messina Singapore menu. There are 5 Singapore exclusive flavours and I must say they are quite on point and representative. My eye was immediately drawn to the Kaya Toast. Apparently all their gelatos are made from scratch and churned daily (I can see that - their kitchen next door is larger than their retail space).

It was busy and a bit chaotic when I was there but kudos to the staff for managing everyone's requests patiently!

This was the line out the door - it moves quickly though!

There are about 3-4 small round tables inside the store. I got mine and got out of the space to the open area just across the road, since it was quite noisy.

So I tried the Salted Egg Yolk gelato, which had a tinge of umami-ness from the egg but it was quite sweet and that overpowered the saltiness I would have liked. I could not taste the gula melaka caramel either. The Kaya Toast was the obvious winner with the pandan fragrance enveloping my tongue. There are also bits of toast for a textural contrast. I would have gotten a scoop of it, but unfortunately they were out (it was literally too hard to scoop out).

So I just said 1 flavour, the chocomint (yes, I am a chocomint girly). However, the guy was super nice and said he's throw in a free scoop for me since he did not want me to leave disappointed. When he asked which second flavour I wanted, I told him to choose his favourite and he got me a pistachio! The pistachio flavour was nicely blended into the very smooth and creamy gelato, though I felt it was a touch too sweet for me. The chocomint on the other hand was an absolute joy - the mint was fresh and not artificial and the chocolate chips in there were semi-dark and very enjoyable with the creamy gelato.

In any case, I think the hype might die down a little. Gelato Messina is worth trying if you are around the area and looking for a dessert after dinner (since there are so many restaurants in the area). However, if you are looking for something a bit more local and of equal quality, head to Apiary at 84 Neil Road.
