Dong Sheng Cafe is a Nanyang-style cafe that opened late last year near me. I of course had to check them out since I am a big fan of Nanyang cuisine, especially their dirty kopi and kaya toast! However, Dong Sheng Cafe does get quite crowded at the weekends and it is a small space, so I held off visiting until one Monday (15 Dec 2025) where it was less crowded.

The cafe has savoury mains like laksa and nasi lemak as well as noodles. Since this was my lunch, I decided to go for a laksa with a dirty iced kopi (S$3.90 ala carte, $2.30 add on), and ordered the kaya toast ala carte after that. The dirty iced kopi was thick, rich and quite fragrant. The froth does actually make it taste better than regular iced kopi, but one cannot hold the cup normally (I ended up rotating the saucer below). 4/5
The laksa (S$6.80) was nothing to write home about. The bits of hum (cockles) were quite disturbing for me because I don't really like their taste, but their presence enhanced the broth, which tasted quite thin. 2.5/5
The main item was the kaya toast. They were probably the best I have ever tried in Singapore. I say this because the toast is nicely toasted, but the star was the Hainanese kaya made with 100% palm sugar. This gave the kaya jam an incredible coconutty fragrance and taste which differentiated it from everyone else. 4.5/5
Overall I would return for the kaya toast, dirty iced kopi and maybe eggs (the set). For mains, I have yet to try their other offerings which might do better than the laksa. Regardless, my tip for you if you're interested to go check it out is to visit on a weekday!
