Brunch Hangout - Blackbird Cafe at The Luxe, Cathay Singapore

Met up with my FYP mates over brunch last weekend and we went to the Blackbird Cafe just right beside the Cathay. It is a very convenient location, being accessible by train (Dhoby Ghaut) for all of us. It also serves brunch. I've had dinner there a couple of times and the food is average.

Unfortunately, so is the brunch. I guess one does not really go to this place expecting super good food, but its more for the location and ambience. When we first reached however the place was really warm inside - but the staff noticed us fanning ourselves and turned down the airconditioning. The service is quite attentive that way.

We ordered cappuccino and iced lattes ($6.20) first.

My friend, fellow food blogger ms-skinnyfat, had the eggs benedict ($12). Tasted good, apparently the hollandaise sauce is quite special as it is rather cheesy.

Another friend had their sandwich ($12). She liked it too.

I was contemplating their big breakfast, but in the end went for the buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup ($10). There's an option to add bananas or strawberries to it for $3. I didn't want it, but I casually asked if I can add on a side order of scrambled eggs. Guess what? It was $2!

The scrambled eggs were divine. Just the way I liked it - creamy, slightly wet and airy fluffy.

The pancakes however were not really great - it looks rather thick in this photo and it is. Being thick, it was a tad dry too. When it was served it was also not as warm as I liked it to be - the butter did not melt easily on it. I started using McDonalds Hotcakes as the reference. But when I requested for the staff to heat it up for me a little bit more, they kindly obliged and it was much better. When heated up, the fragrance of the buttermilk mixed with the butter and maple syrup made for a pleasant combination.

Unfortunately I have to give it a Thumbs Down simply Giving it a neutral rating because it has gotten a +1 by Daniel and I always trust a fellow foodie. I will be back to try it again and see if the other items there are better. I suspect so and certainly hope it will be!

  2. The pancakes may not be the best thing, but this is one fine brunch place for me. :) Most of the items I tried, worked well.

    1. Ah! I suspected that it had redeeming qualities. Thanks for your comment -- I think I shall revise it to a Neutral rating for now then and go back to evaluate!
