Cafe Hangout: Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar at 150 Tyrwhitt Rd, Singapore

Are you, like many of Singaporeans, a hype follower?

There is nothing wrong in that, of course. I admit to being a hype follower occasionally as well. And this time round I followed the hyped up smell to the latest indie cafe at Chye Seng Huat Hardware (CSHH) Coffee Bar. Started by the folks of Papa Pahelta, they have cleverly turned a hardware store turned into a cool and hipstery cafe in the Lavendar/Kallang industrial area (rather near Loysel's Toys) as well!

It coincidentally is also just 1 bus stop away from where I work. So on a Saturday afternoon after leaving the office I decided to go check it out. My colleague was there at 11.30am and told me it was crazy packed by noon. I decided to go anyway but was mentally prepared to leave because of the crowd.

This is the building. There are actually many REAL hardware stores around, but this one is a fake one. The main entrance door you see below the chinese sign, is not a door.
You have to enter by the grey gate into the courtyard, before entering the building from the side.

This is the courtyard where there is The Roastery outside. There's also a smaller room on the right.

And this is the main room. It was. really. crowded. It was really nicely decorated though. There are racks of coffee that you can buy in the background. The bar is a U-shaped one.

Another view. Very busy! Quite noisy. Not a place to chill out on weekends, unfortunately. I heard it is also crowded on weekdays during lunch, but the manageable type.

There was a long queue for food and drinks. The iced drip coffee which I heard was good, was sold out. Nooo!

The baristas were really busy but they are really quick, actually.

Here's the menu for you to look at the prices. The usual range of around $4-6. They also have savoury food and desserts.

Some of the pastries available. They look quite good, even if it is on the pricier side (you can get better croissants at Maison Kayser, probably). Items were flying off the shelves!

We got 2 lattes, a lemonade (pour moi) and a hazelnut cake which is filled with hazelnuts! It was rather moist and not too sweet. Safe item to order.

Here I am with my sister Felicia, who's in town for a visit! We managed to find a table, after the crowd eased a little. It wasn't as bad.

Overall a great concept and place to have a cup of coffee and some sweet treats. Wait for the crowd to subside first, unless you like your coffee with a side of hype.
