I had the pleasure to be invited to the latest halal concept by the Populus Group, which is Ga Ja Korean Kitchen and Table at Jln Kayu (next to their cafe, Apricus!). I think it is so brilliant to have a Muslim-owned halal Korean restaurant that our Muslim friends can go to for their K-food fix, because EVERYONE watches K-dramas and listens to K-pop here.
The space is very thoughtfully designed and transported me back to a traditional restaurant in Korea. Legit the vibes were immaculate.
There was also thankfully no food smell, so kudos on the ventilation.
We were first served with freeflow banchan, which were so addictive. The kimchi was especially delicious because it was just the right amount of sour and spicy. I loved the quail eggs too and would probably eat more if I didn't have a lot of food coming, hehe.
First up was the Rice Ball Kit (S$12.90), which allows us to mix up the rice using our hands (gloves provided) and to squish up some rice balls. I find this especially fun and interactive. It's always yummier when hands are involved!
The perilla or sesame? oil fragrance went well with the sesame, seaweed, tobiko and mayo.
5/5
Next up was the Beef Soondubu Jiggae (S$21.90) which was probably my second favourite dish during the lunch. The soup wasn't too salty (as with Korean soups, I learned) and not spicy, so it allowed the complex flavours to really come through. The beef slices in there were soft and tender too, just like the tofu. Also a very generous portion! 5/5
Next up, the Spicy Cheesy Chicken Dakgalbi (S$16.90). It had that satisfying mozzarella cheese pull that comes with enough cheese prepared fresh, but the chicken itself was also marinated very well. In fact, the sweet and slightly spicy chicken had a very old-school, homemade taste which was very good. It was also served with lettuce and ssamjang for those wishing for a healthier bite. 5/5
We also got a portion of the naengmyeon (S$17.90), which was really refreshing. However, here the noodle portions were a bit too much for the broth, which I had given feedback about. If the ratios are tweaked it would have also gotten 5/5 but for now it will be a 3.5/5. I do appreciate the vinegar and mustard on the side for people to decide how sour or spicy they want it to be!
The star of the lunch, and i think the signature of the restaurant, had to be their Seafood Pancake (S$23.90). I indicated less oily in the notes. But what came out was perfection on a plate - the thin batter was lightly and expertly fried so it is crispy but did not overwhelm the spring onions and generous amounts of seafood on it. The soy sauce green chilli dip was also the perfect accompaniment. It was so good and addictive to just keep eating, if we weren't so full we would have! 5/5
The seafood pancake is a must-order, but overall I think Ga Ja Korean Kitchen and Table is worth checking out with your friends if you are in the north side and driving. Their dishes taste good, the ambiance was great and the service was warm. What more can one ask for? They do walk-ins now but will start reservations in December! Ga Ja!
