I went to the doctor's today. I was feeling unwell, and needed to get my Medical Certificate. I went into the room, and the doctor was an old lady whom you can mistake for any random auntie at the wet market. "So what's wrong with you?" she asked.
"I have the flu." I replied.
"Flu? You cannot tell me you have the flu. Do you know that everything can be called the flu? Even a headache can be considered a flu. Just tell me the symptoms."
"I have a blocked nose, and light-headedness. Headache." I replied, stung by her mini outburst. I did not expect that. Last time I checked, a flu was a flu.
She proceeded to scribble something on her pad in illegible handwriting. She then checked my throat with a ice-cream stick. Apparently I have slightly swollen tonsils.
"I am going to give you antibiotics..." she murmured to herself while writing on the pad.
"What? No.. no need lah. Not so serious," I told her, after a brief second of digesting what she has told me. I went in with mild flu. I don't need antibiotics!
"Patient not keen on antibiotics.." She continued to murmur to herself, and struck out what she wrote previously. "I'll give you some medication for your blocked nose, and another one to reduce the redness of your tonsils, ok?" She scrambled around the table to find something.
"OK," I replied, surprised again at how easy it was to refute her prescription. Got my Medical Certificate though, which was the whole point of my visit.
When I got home, I googled the medication she prescribed me. The flu med was legit, but the Korzen (Serratiopeptidase) is really quack medicine. According to Wikipedia (I still trust it, some): "Some alternative medicine proponents claim that serratiopeptidase is beneficial for pain and inflammation but "existing trials [have been] small and generally of poor methodological quality."
The doctor had been one for a very long time. She is a doctor, and thus whatever she prescribes would be the right medicine. She chided me for going to her with a bad description of complaint, and proceeded to give me an extreme medication. I refuted it easily and she was confused. The medication at the end was 50% right. I got my medicate certificate though, it was an official document I needed that she issued, because only she can.
Perhaps it's time I go to another doctor.

Went for dinner last Monday with a bunch of old friends, in honor of my birthday (again!) Was hankering for some italian, and found that there's one just right opposite my office! Having read favorable reviews on HGW (I never go in blind), I suggested that we have dinner there.
It was a very nice restaurant. Being a Monday night, it was also super quiet, though not for long with our group, not that we made a lot of noise, but definitely added some life to the place.
It's our luck perhaps too to go on a quiet night. The staff was excellent, and the chef came out to speak with us too! He was really amusing with the Italian accent, and recommended every single dish on the menu. That was cute.
We had a difficult time deciding, but finally did so. There's also a 3-course dinner set for 39++ which is quite reasonable!
Then came the appetizers! Here, it's asparagus with cheese fondue. Very interesting taste, quite well made. It was quite popular in the reviews too.
Then came the most interesting twist perhaps to a dish. Parma harm with rock melon SORBET! Yeah that round yellow ball in the middle is actually a very very creamy sorbet. Heavenly paired with the parma ham. I like creativity and surprises in my food.
Next was the wine intro! The waiter was really hilarious, and told us this wine is exclusively distributed from this really rich shipping magnate that makes wine as a hobby. Therefore if we are unhappy with the wine, we can ship back the bottle and let him know. At $45 a pop, we are sold. And it was indeed not bad at all.
Next you're gonna be hit by a 4-dish photo whammy. Ready?
First up, duck confit! Not on the menu, special for the day. It was really quite good. The duck skin was crispy and the orange sauce tangy. What we did was to rotate the dishes among the 4 of us, so 1/4 each and we get to try all!
Lastly, the sleeper hit among the 4 -- lemon risotto with scallops! Nette claims this to be the best risotto she's ever had. I might have to agree with her except I have only tried 1 other risotto recently and that was home-made by my brother. This was really good because the lemon kept the dish from being "gelak", local speak for "too much". So it became a really light carbo dish, which is surprising. The scallops were nothing to speak of, but the risotto...!
Lastly, we capped off the meal with 2 desserts. White chocolate mousse with maraschino cherries. It was actually really disappointing. The cherries seemed to be those that is bright red instead of the dark red ones, and it is blended and mixed into a cube, which explains the pink colour. Grainy to the taste, and much too artificial for me. Skip!
But their panna cotta was gooooood.
Sweet, creamy, satisfying. It's like drawing a big fat full stop at the end of a long sentence.
The boss of the place also treated us to 4 shots of a sweet honey liqueur, apparently a type of wine from Sicily. It is REALLY nice. We tried asking the name, but couldn't figure it out.
What made this place go from good to awesome was in the end, the service and ambience. Other than the food, the waiters are all cheery and attentive. The wine and menu recommendations helped greatly. It just feels good to have food in a place where it doesn't seem like they just want to make money off you. We spent about 250 in total, which seems really worth it if you think about all the food we had, and the wine. Plus, excellent service.
Gets a vote from me! Go try it and let me know!

We had some bread with yummy olive oil and vinegar first.
Super fun to catch up with them!

The tagliatelle pasta is my least favourite among all. Not that special. Couldn't wait for my next rotation.
Lovers of lamb, here's a huge looking lamb shank! But it's actually quite a manageable size, and the meat MELTS off that 2 skinny bones there. Yummy. You can taste the lamb, but not TOO much lamb, if you know what I mean.

The east might most probably triumph the west of Singapore when it comes to culinary and coolness factor. This is proven right this time when a friend introduced The Cheesecake Cafe to me. It is a small unassuming cafe along a stretch of bistros and cafes in the Siglap area. You will hardly think anything of it if you go past without looking closely since the sign tentage is all mossy, and it looks quite dark inside.
Once you step into the place however, you will be transported to the Victorian era. Or an antique shop. But it is certainly a different experience from the other cafes nowadays simply because the decor is just so unique!
The walls were covered with oil paintings with gilded frames. Very impressed with stone busts that dot the entrance as well.
There was a green tea chocolate cheesecake special that day, but my friend went with the classic Peach with Jelly, which sounds really interesting from the usual america or oreo cheesecakes.
The menu is filled with cakes, teas and coffees. I suspect the beverage prices are jacked up SO much because people just order 1 cuppa and sit there for eternity.
I had latte to go with the cheesecake, which I thought was quite fragrant and light. However it really is nothing THAT special, the decor and ambience made up for it instead.

and that concludes yet another venture into the East. Visit it if you are around the area looking for a nice quiet place for a chat with a cuppa.

It was quite empty on a Saturday late afternoon though the crowd progressively poured in and was full house by 9.

Watch and learn, mambo-wannabes! These people are the pros invited to perform the classic zouk moves during the 20th Anniversary of the club institution of Singapore, Zouk on 15th April 2011!
I am always amazed by how they learn the moves -- by going to zouk mambo every wednesday and watching/dancing until you get it right.
When asked why there aren't any 'instructional' videos on youtube, my brother (one of the performers) replied that you are supposed to GO DOWN to zouk to learn, not stay home and watch veedio!
He's got a point. But watch the youtube anyway if you are like me and just think it's super amusing.
Edit (12 July 2011, 11:17): New video about the mambo moves on Youtube by local fimmaker and photographer Jing Quek! Loves the way its composed and filmed. Check out his other works here.

Read about ReStore Cafe, this aptly named used furniture + cafe on 8 Days a while ago. Had been wanting to check it out for the longest time, and finally did so today!
First impression: so many chairs! Rather innovative way of hanging them up on the wall. I like how all of them are of different character and style, but all lovingly reupholstered. It's a small shop house space, but it is very cosy. The cafe also has coffees, pancakes, waffles, muffins and bagels. All my favourite breakfast/tea time pastries!
The furniture is all for sale, including that very cool foldable ruler! (@zbaf bought one of them for $10)
Overall a nice quiet corner for a cuppa and a book, but they don't have wifi so that's not as convenient. It is also definitely a place to go for if you want to pick up some furniture that has some solid bit of history or character to it. *imagines retro house with cool chairs*

I like that mirror that is all corroded.
Lastly, I bought their last cinnamon raisin bagel with caramel cream cheese ($5.50) to go. It was good, and the lady boss helped me toast and spread the cream cheese!
I have a weakness for bagels.

Oh be still my beating heart!
Received a mailer today about the new Continental Wallet by Proenza Schouler, who's PS1 bags in medium still makes my heart skip a beat every time I gaze at it.
They have Proenza Schouler wallets in 13 colours. My favourite is the black. or the beige. or the denim blue. Or the orange. or the light sky blue. Oh man. But these are not as similar to the PS1.
The new Continental wallet seems to be a baby version of their classic PS1. In 5 classic colours, each of them just looks like it needs to be caressed immediately.

Went for a sumptuous seafood dinner at Casuarina Road on 3rd April, which coincidentally was my birthday. The reason for the dinner was much bigger though, its the first time for a long time that almost everyone could make it for that dinner. It took about 39 comments on a Facebook update by jm to organize, and I must say it is really successful!
I can't believe I did not know about the place even though Casuarina is really near my house. This restaurant apparently is an Institution in the zichar industry, having all the right star dishes to be sought by hungry Singaporeans week after week. The mandarin name is 万隆华和海鲜菜馆, and their most famous dish is apparently the Butter Crab. The chili crab looked good too so we ordered that as well.
Hence we ordered... The kailan, which is really nice and crunchy. The sweet and sour pork, which is also well done, and the hotplate toufu, also very nice. The prawn paste chicken there is also a signature, and yup! it is really good. Almost or even better than Kok Sen's version at Keong Saik. Hot and crispy does it.
Those were the calafares though. The stars of the show were the medium sized butter and chili crabs. They are 38 per kg, so apparently a medium crab is about 3kg. The pincers were HUGE. I had one and it was so juicy and yummy. I don't really know how to eat the rest of a crab, so i only had a little, but the chili crab sauce was super good. We ordered fried mantous to dip them in.
The butter crab is really awesome too. Tastes a bit like cereal prawns with the crunchy bits but the butter just dusts the crab with a buttery goodness that brings out the freshness of the crabmeat.
All in all it is a very very satisfactory meal. It was about 24 bucks per person for all that too. Oh except the fact that we ordered a beehoon which took FOREVER to arrive, which by then we were already settling the bill! We told them that was unacceptable and wanted to cancel the dish but they insisted to bill us and packed it into a container for us to take away. That was really not nice of them since it is their fault to take so long to cook. That really soured the experience. Ambience-wise it was also not that good since it was really really crowded and the weather was warm. Noise was loud. If not for the quality of the food I would really try to avoid going there, especially on weekends or special occasions. Perhaps it will be better during a weekday.
And damn I got hungry just by blogging this. I hope you are too so I am not alone!

I was brought to Hatched on my hatch day on the 3rd of April this year to have a celebratory birthday brunch. Or consolatory, since I am a quarter of a century young. It was one of the places I've always wanted to go, so I was really excited when I knew we were going there. The location was kept a surprise till the last minute. It is situated at Evans Lodge, so initially I thought we were going to Halia when I saw the Botanical Gardens sign, but no. Instead it is inside this really old building that had a holding room reminiscent of a hospital waiting room where everyone waited for a table.
The menu in the form of a children's book was really cool and the characters reminded me of ee shaun's drawings. I wonder who's the illustrator? They were quite run down though, and one of the menu had a missing page in it.
Prices were reasonable, and they have a wide selection of eggs. I can't wait to go back and try out their scrambled! Reason being that day, we ordered the poached ones.

I went out afterwards for a seafood dinner with my primary school friends. Will blog about that separately. During the day I had tonnes of well wishes on Facebook, which was very cool. I'm so glad my birthday fell on a Sunday so I can celebrate it from Sat night all the way to Sunday night, and that all my friends remembered. I feel so blessed. We had a reservation, so we waltzed right in. Time check, Sunday 12.30pm.

Here is my Sir Benedict. Poached egg with hollandaise sauce on top of bacon and english muffin together with mashed potato with creamy mushroom sauce and some salad.
Had a cuppa to go with it. THIS IS PERFECT.
My friend had a Burly Benedict, which consists of poached egg with mornay sauce, corned beef on top of English muffin and sauteed potatoes with salad.
Our big breakfasts!
The meal was really satisfying and not too heavy (it's only the start of Sunday, gotta take it easy). The eggs were well done (after all, they are called Hatched and it is their specialty). The sides also complimented everything and was really tasty. Felt quite 'healthy' after eating as well since its quite light and made with good ingredients.
We then decided to order some pancakes with banana to end off brunch. It came with fresh cream and maple syrup. Sadly the pancakes were too dry and not nice. The portion was also huge and we couldn't finish! Food for Thought's pancakes were much better!

You're looking at a 25-year-old object. Hi.
Was walking around after that when I received a call from a florist. Apparently i have a bouquet of flowers delivered to my house! It also came with a dkny watch, which was delivered wrongly and the florist sheepishly asked if the driver can go back to collect it. OMG. Haha it was quite funny. I got my brother to tell me who sent me the flowers, and turns out its my bestie! Thank you :)
They are hot pink roses with purple small flowers. It is very very nice!
I couldn't help staring at them.
Look how pretty they are?
:) Being a quarter of a century old wasn't that bad after all.
Earworm alert! Yes i am embedding Britney Spears' latest music video. I was transfixed to the video and how her mouth is forever open ever since viewing the MV on facebook posted by @esotism.
you know you wanna watch it.
Dec 21, 2012 is when the world ends and britney spears is still singing with gyrating hot men. yay!

Ever since getting the iphone 4, i've never used my digital camera because there is no need. The primary reason for me to queue for the iphone and get it is also because of this improvement in camera technology. There's flash, there are 2 cameras, it's 5 megapixel, there's auto focus (love the macro!) and the colours from the photos are the most accurate compared to other blue-green tinged camera phones of equal pixels.

Finally! After years and years of staying put where they are and having other blogging platforms zoom past them, blogger/google decided to do something. it is not game-changing, makes no impact whatsoever to the blogging experience, but still..
it's a "wanna see something cool?" kinda thing.
Blogger has recently introduced the Blogger Dynamic View so that readers can skip out of annoying pink frilly templates or black goth ones simply by typing /view after the .blogspot.com
You will go to the default/sidebar new viewer, where you can select your 'style' on the sidebar above at the left.

Dear readers,
once upon a time, or rather, in 25 years, on the 3rd of April, a woman bore a baby girl to the world.
That person is me!
Ok yes, so it's my birthday. And i am slightly jetlagged as you can tell since it is 4.16am and i am not sleepy (it's only 10:16pm in Zurich), having landed this morning at 6am and sleeping from 8.30am-3pm.
Gonna have a blast later today! I'm so glad I came back in time for my birthday.
